Although the Waterford area has been inhabited for 5 thousand years or more,
the city itself is generally agreed to date from sometime in the 9th Century,
when the Vikings established a longphort (ship's harbour)
at the confluence of the rivers Suir (pronounced "shure") and Pill (aka St. John's).

The early fortified Viking city was confined
to the small area between the river and what is now Christchurch Cathedral
(1st spire from left in the above picture).
