Carlow is about 45 miles north of Waterford and 50 miles south of Dublin.
I don't know it well, but it seems a relaxed, easy-going town,
situated in the Barrow River valley in the middle of rich, rolling countryside.
It's got two beautiful churches with slim, almost delicate looking spires;
Carlow Castle, a 13th Century fortification on the River Barrow;
the Barrow Way, running for miles along the riverbank north and south of the town;
and the famous Browneshill Dolmen, which has the largest capstone in Europe, if not the world.
Every year in early/mid-June, Carlow holds its Eigse Festival of Arts, Crafts, Street events and general celebration.
